JOHN PIELMEIER'S philosophical drama, ''Agnes of God,'' was a long-running hit on Broadway. After winning the trust of Sister Agnes, Dr. Livingston learns about her sheltered life and her obsession with God and suffering. Occasionally Miss Carnevale exhibits flashes of pain, terror and anger that effectively made Agnes vulnerable to the immediate criminal charges as well as to the overwhelming world surrounding her. While looking around the convent grounds, Livingston comes across a barn. He rules over Heaven and is the mastermind behind the "Ineffable Plan"that is, his unknowable and unchangeable plan for the universe. Although they called the police and Agnes was arrested and arraigned, she was allowed to stay in the convent while waiting for trial. It remains unclear almost till the end whether Sister Agnes is deranged, an imbecile or a saint. court-appointed psychiatrist must assess the sanity of a novice As the nuns tend to her, they find a dead baby in a trash can with its umbilical cord wrapped around its neck. Miriam sees Agnes as innocent, and comes into conflict with Dr. Livingstone during the investigation. Agnes, for instance, has been abused, physically, vocally and emotionally, and she represents the victim who exits one abusive relationship, and finds herself in another one which is just as abusive, although in a different way. Livingstones questions force all three women to re-examine the meaning of faith and the power of love, leading to a dramatic, compelling climax. The movie uses each half of its story to avoid dealing with the other.
